Pretty Plastic Tiles win the 2020 Detail Prize

In addition to major worldwide events, 2020 was also, for the architecture industry, the year of the ninth edition of the international DETAIL Prize. This is an award for buildings that are remarkably distinguished by well-designed, future-oriented, and technically-innovative details within an outstanding overall concept.

In the magazine DETAIL, which issues in German and English, each edition is dedicated to specific topics in construction and architecture. And, every two years, they deliver awards in cooperation with sponsors from industry and conceptual partners from the political sphere. The DETAIL Prize aims to highlight the importance of architecture for society, strengthen the role of architects in public, and promote networking among architects, industrialists, developers, and politicians.

It is an honor to tell you that the winning project of the 2020 DETAIL Prize was realized by the founders of Pretty Plastic - Peter van Assche, Hester van Dijk, and Reinder Bakker.

Together, they built the facade of "The People’s Pavilion" at the Dutch Design week 2017, in Eindhoven. The cladding material used for the facade was actually plastic waste from Eindhovenaren that they carefully sorted by type and color. Thanks to the trust and support of the Dutch Design Foundation, the shingles on the People’s Pavilion were an important step in the development of Pretty Plastic Tiles.

“With Pretty Plastic, we want to prevent as much plastic waste as possible from ending up in landfills. The building industry is one of the biggest sources of pollution and waste worldwide. As architects and designers, we feel it is our responsibility to change this. Acknowledging the value of waste and turning it into a beautiful building material is a way to do this.” - The founders of Pretty Plastic (Overtreders W & Bureau SLA).
