Circular Façade tile from Pretty Plastic included in the National Environmental Database

The environmental performance of circular building materials is still not well represented in the Dutch National Environmental Database (NMD). The NMD acts as an independent knowledge source to enable a consistent calculation of the environmental performance of buildings in the Netherlands. The inclusion of the 100% recycled PVC tile from Pretty Plastic in the NMD is a significant milestone. This makes the positive impact of these circular tiles visible in circular building projects. The tile was designed and produced by Pretty Plastic and has already been applied to various construction projects both domestically and internationally. The tile is the first fully recycled facade cladding to be included in the NMD with a category 1 product card based on a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).

The results of this LCA are summarized in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Thanks to the proprietary data provided by the manufacturer, the Pretty Plastic tile has been placed in the NMD with a category 1 product card. This category provides a much more detailed view than the general category 3 product card. This makes the specific environmental performance of the Pretty Plastic tile visible and directly contributes to a reduction in the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) score. When using the Pretty Plastic tile as facade cladding, builders can also claim the Environmental Investment Allowance (MIA/VAMIL scheme) as part of circular facade construction.

The facade tiles from Pretty Plastic are fully certified for technical and sustainable performance. The tile developed by Pretty Plastic uses over 24 kilograms of recycled PVC per square meter. This means that every construction project in which the tiles are installed contributes directly to reducing the PVC waste pile. The mission of Pretty Plastic is in line with both European and Dutch plans to achieve a circular economy by 2050.
