A future-proof Road Support Centre where circular construction, climate adaptation and biodiversity come together. Clad with 1,070 m² of recycled Pretty Plastic tiles, the building sets a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in the Netherlands.

CIRCULAR INFRASTRUCTURE CLAD WITH PRETTY PLASTIC

The new Road Support Centre in Scharendijke demonstrates how infrastructure can be circular, climate-adaptive and expressive at the same time. Completed in 2025, the centre was rebuilt to meet the latest sustainability standards, with material reuse and environmental performance at the core of the design.

The façade features 1,070 m² of Pretty Plastic First One tiles in Dark Grey, upcycling 26,110 kg of post-consumer PVC and giving the building a strong, layered identity aligned with its future-proof function.

Circular and sustainable design

Rijkswaterstaat aims to be climate-neutral by 2030, and the Scharendijke centre is a clear step in that direction. More than half of all materials used in the project were reused or recycled. Concrete, steel, timber and even masonry from earlier structures were given a second life, and nearly all materials from the former building were processed on-site.

Pretty Plastic tiles contributed to this circular strategy by offering a fully recycled PVC cladding solution that supports both performance and aesthetics.

Integrating biodiversity

Nature-inclusive design was an intentional part of the project. Two bat hotels were installed after bats were discovered on-site, and a purpose-built barn owl 'penthouse' has been added to maintain local biodiversity.

A future-proof infrastructure hub

Mourik Industriebouw and Arcadis have created a modern, high-performing support centre that brings together circular construction, climate adaptation and biodiversity. The result is an infrastructure project that is operationally efficient while reducing its environmental footprint.

Pretty Plastic is proud to contribute with a façade solution made entirely from recycled PVC – proving once more that circular materials can define both performance and identity.
