ABOUT THE PROJECT:
IKC De Tamboerijn in Alphen aan den Rijn marks a special milestone: it is the very first realised façade project using our Second High circular tile. This innovative educational building demonstrates how post-war school architecture can be transformed into a modern, energy-efficient and future-proof environment – without the need for full demolition.
Instead of starting from scratch, the project preserves the original character of the building through a combination of renovation, partial demolition and new construction. The result is a fresh new identity and a more sustainable building, aligned with today’s environmental and aesthetic standards.
A key feature of this transformation is the striking façade made from 100% recycled Pretty Plastic tiles. For this project, 152 m² of our Second High tiles were installed in three shades of Ochre and a deep Terracotta tone – bringing warmth, texture and variation to the playground-facing façade. In total, the project prevented 1,985 kg of building waste from being landfilled or incinerated.
Second High is the newest addition to our façade tile collection and uses a different mounting system than our other two models. IKC De Tamboerijn therefore served as a critical pilot project. Installation was completed smoothly, thanks to our self-developed mounting brackets made from recycled aluminium.
The façade now not only expresses a new identity, but also tells a story of circularity, innovation and responsible design. A powerful example of how sustainable renovation can give ageing educational buildings a second life – using materials that already had one.
More projects with the Second High tile are coming soon – stay tuned in 2026!
